Are you tackling mental ill health in your workplace?

All businesses understand how important their employees’ physical health is, but how about their mental health and well-being? Who are your mental health first aiders?

The cost of mental ill health

Mental ill health is the leading cause of disability in the UK, with 1 in 4 people in the country experiencing a mental health problem each year. Right now, 1 in 6 workers will be dealing with a mental health problem such as anxiety, depression or stress.

With mental ill health currently costing UK employers an estimated £26 billion, (which equates to an average of over £1,000 per employee), being able to recognise the early warning signs that someone may be unwell, feeling confident to provide initial help and knowing how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help could, in its most powerful form, save a life.

Research conducted by National Mind confirms that a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers. According to the research:

  • 1 in 5 people take a day off work due to stress.
  • 1 in 10 people have resigned from a job due to stress; 1 in 4 have thought about it.
  • 19% of staff feel they can’t speak to managers about stress at work.
  • 56% of employers said they would like to do more to improve staff wellbeing but don't feel they have the right training or guidance.
