Pinewood Studios plan to expand on Green Belt land

Pinewood Studios is planning a major expansion to its existing grounds, and cites “very special circumstances” for doing so on Green Belt land.

In what is sure to be a hotly-debated issue, the world-famous film and television studios based in Buckinghamshire maintain that the future of the British film industry is at threat, if they are unable to expand and meet the growing demands that are being placed upon them.

It will need to be proved that the future of the UK film and television industry cannot be achieved by any other way than this expansion project, and that the benefits of expansion sufficiently outweigh the harm caused to the Green Belt.

The economic argument is a compelling one; Oxford Economics reports that for every £1 of tax credits invested in the film industry, £12 is generated, while employment within the film industry rose to over 60,000 during 2011, impressive figures during recessionary times.

Direct or indirect employment as a result of Pinewood Studios’ activities is estimated to double to 9,400 if the plans get the go ahead; while the local economy really benefits from Pinewood’s presence; local companies are often used to supply products and services to the studios.

The UK Government is considering extending tax incentives for creative industries and as the UK is already seen as a very fiscally welcoming host for film-making this means there could soon be a surge in demand for world-class studio facilities.

Pinewood Studios is a global brand and a worldwide leader in film and television production, but it needs to keep moving to stay ahead of the chasing pack. The challenges to this expansion are large and obvious, but should it go ahead it will mean a real financial benefit to the local and national economy.
